NAVY baseball 2023

So it hits me last night that today would be the first day of college baseball and I had not even looked to see where Navy was opening-- before looking at navysports.com I say to myself "hey - maybe defending national champs Ole Miss invited someone from the DMV area to come south to kick off the season?" My real baseball related dream is to one day see Navy play in a Oxford regional but a February cold WX series in Oxford would suffice. So I pull up the Ole Miss schedule and WTF do I see?

And if that ain't enough of kick in the pants next weekend visitors:

And we're still doing that remote eastern North Carolina meet up with Air Force. Does some entity pay for that? I made the trip once and there were less than a dozen Navy faithful there. That little town makes Greenville NC look like Greenville SC.

Patriot League Swimming & Diving Championship

As this was done in four days, the results were completed.

The Women and the Men, when everything was completed, both won the championship. The Women won by 183.5 points as the Men won by 10 points as both of them beat Army and all the rest of those colleges.

The total events against Army are:
Women Swimming & Diving
1. Navy 799
2. Army 615.5

Men Swimming & Diving
1. Navy 856.5
2. Army 846.5

And as we won these against Army with the championship, it was probably all about the Army tapered to beat Navy back in time and that tapering should not occur until the Patriot League Championship. And back in time, the Women did beat Army by just a little and the Men lost against Army with all that tapering.

Go Navy!!! Beat Army!!!

Newberry is Navy Football's Next Head Coach - Updated 12/19

Ok. Maybe this is too soon, but everyone is talking around it anyway. We might as well discuss it in its own thread.

Who do you think the next HC will be? Or at least, who are the potential candidates? If it's Coach New, who are the choices at OC? I've read Bohannon from Kennesaw St., maybe an OC from Army or AF. Heck, "National Championship" coach Scott Frost ran the option, and he's currently unemployed.

Sad news from AFA

Parents Club Presidents,

It saddens me to inform you that we lost one of our cadets yesterday. On Monday morning, Cadet Third Class Hunter Brown of Cadet Squadron 16, experienced a medical emergency while leaving his dormitory for class. Academy first responders were immediately called and attempted life saving measures, but they were ultimately unsuccessful. Hunter was a standout offensive lineman on the Falcon football team and was well-respected in his squadron. The entire Air Force Academy mourns his loss, and our hearts and condolences are with his family, his squadron, and all who were touched by this incredible young man.

Blake horvath

I was excited to see him hit the 3 deep at the end of the season. I believe he was a flexbone QB in highschool wasn't he? Looks like he can really run. I'm guessing if we get the offense many think....some type of 2 back gun option that this will hurt his chances of seeing the field next year. Any realistic chance we get a flex OC?

PJ Volker intro

Boy, he is a fired-up individual.

Not too much in the way of anything new. I asked if he had considered anyone to backfill his position, and he said that he will continue to coach linebackers and that staffing will be left to Newberry. I found that interesting in that it doesn't necessarily mean that there *will* be another defensive coach coming on board, which could give some flexibility in who stays or goes offensively. Talked a *lot* about being aggressive, which is sort of standard defensive coordinator talk but still was interesting. Also talked about how he likes being a defensive coach on an option team.

Signing Day

Coach Newberry mentioned in his press conference that there were recruits who wanted to wait until February to sign due to the coaching change. However, there were still several that committed today.

Newberry intro

- Named PJ Volker as defensive coordinator
- Said he would ideally like to have offensive staff in place by the 2nd week of January when the recruiting dead period ends
- Was very, very complimentary of Niumat in multiple answers
- Chet outlined his search, said he went up and down the eastern seaboard talking to people and conducted several phone interviews
- Chet said he used Chad Chatlos' firm to assist with the search
- Newberry said that there hasn't been the kind of recruiting shakeup that he thought there would be outside of some commits waiting until February rather than signing now
- Said "this is not a rebuild," believes the talent is there to win right away

Press conference

Not sure if you guys were following along with me on Twitter... It was short, pretty rapid-fire. Lots of boilerplate stuff, a few important takeaways.

- Called the triple option "the fiber of who we are." Said it is a factor in hiring, although it doesn't necessarily mean that the coach will be an option guy himself. Could be someone who just hires an option-focused coordinator.

- I didn't get the sense that it had to be a pure triple option, though. Offense should be option-based, but that can mean a lot of things. Chet did stress, though, that Navy hasn't been successful when they've strayed too far from the option.

- Said that this decision didn't come down to one game.

- Search firms have contacted him, but he was intentionally (and admittedly) ambiguous as to whether one would be used. Said today was for letting the dust settle. Did say that Newberry would be a viable candidate and that he's certain that Newberry's interested in the job.

My personal addendum to this-- I think the Navy job is more attractive than people think and that Chet wants to see what kind of interest he can draw before making a decision.

- The next coach does not need previous service academy experience. Chet said that anyone smart enough to work there can figure the place out. Said that there is value in a diversity of thought and opinion, and that someone from the outside of the SA bubble might bring that.

- Did not want to get into the conversation between him and Ken.

- Said the changes coming in the conference were a factor in his decision.

- Said that a lot of the pandemic restrictions came from Big Navy, not the athletic department or even the school. Said that it affected the BYU game but there was time to get right since then.
