I went to this last night, a little begrudgingly because of a lot of stuff going on this weekend and I am real glad I did. It was packed with old players from the 60s 70s and 80s, and it was a night for stories from the following speakers:
Kate Welsh - George's daughter
Rick Forzano Jr
Phil McConkey '79 - by far the best and most entertaining
Chet Moeller '76
RADM Tom Lynch '64
Roger Staubach '65
Bill Belichik
I just recently read that Forzano recruited Lynch and Staubach, and they were great stories. Moeller told a story about going to Welsh and telling him he wanted to resign second class summer and Welsh just said "Why would you want to do that? No, I don't think you are." End of story. Belichik got his first NFL job on Forzano's Detroit Lion staff. McConkey weighed 145 on I Day.
They were all awesome. Belichik stood up and said that he has spent more time at USNA in his life than anyone in the room. He was probably right. He also said he has coached a number of Navy players......but none from AF or Army, and he was ok with that. He was incredibly gracious to the Welsh and Forzano family - who he knows extremely well - and everyone who wanted to shake his hand ( I deferred).
Oh yeah - emceed by John Feinstein who was quite funny. Busted McConkey's balls all night for going so long (he did, but he was such a good speaker it was ok).
Great evening.
