In 2016, Tulsa had the nation's best total offense. Dane Evans was a 3000 yd passer, James Flanders and D'Angelo Brew both rushed for 1000 yds, and Keevan Lucas and Josh Atkinson were each 1000 yd receivers. The 2016 team lost only to Ohio State, Houston and Navy. Only Brewer remains from this squad.
The 2017 team is 31st in the nation in scoring offense (more than 38 points per game).
On the flip side, the 2017 squad is 125th in the nation in rushing defense and 123rd in scoring defense. They face the nation's second best rushing team this week.
Head Coach Philip Montgomery has more than two decades of coaching experience. His defensive coordinator , Bill Young, has more than 45 years of coaching experience. Growing up and playing in Texas and Oklahoma, they've lived wishbone and veer triple option football. They have faced Navy twice, losing 44-21 in 2015 and a narrow defeat 42-40 in 2016.
The Golden Hurricanes lost to triple option New Mexico on Saturday 16-13. The Lobos rushed for 338 yds, and held the ball more than 42 minutes.
Tulsa has the advantage of playing at home this year. (Trivia: Tulsa is the smallest school in the AAC at 4,352 undergrad + graduates.) Both Navy's and Tulsa's DCs have their work cut out for them. Should be a great game on ESPNU.
Very interesting that Navy correctly predicted what defense Cincinnati would employ and practiced against it all week.
